Tidewater Community College is part of the Virginia Community College System. The school, founded in 1968, provides educational services to the South Hampton Roads region. It encompasses several campuses including those at Chesapeake, Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Portsmouth and Olde Towne Portsmouth.

Tidewater, or TCC, is a higher education school, providing programs that usually are no longer than two years in length, beyond high school. The school's career and technical education programs prepare students for employment in the areas of technicians, clerical work, paraprofessionals and skilled craftspeople. Individuals prepare for careers in industrial, service, engineering, government, business and agricultural industries. The school assembles these programs based on local needs.

TCC also provides a college transfer program. This program fits the needs of students planning to enroll in a four-year college program, but want to fulfill the basic first year and second year requirements close to home. These programs meet the needs of students who will later transfer into a wide range of baccalaureate degree programs.

The school also provides a number of general education courses designed to improve the overall well-being and education of everyday citizens of the community. These programs change regularly to meet the demands of the local community.

TCC also provides a workforce development program in which the school collaborates with area business, government and community organizations to help improve the regional economic health. Businesses and other organizations may work with TCC to design a program that meets the needs of their employees or associates. Classes may occur on campus or at the organization's location. Programs teach technology advancement, problem solving, teamwork and other aspects as the organization requires.

The workforce development program also meets the needs of area businesses and organizations in assessments and other services. It collaborates with local businesses and industries to train and educate employees in areas the organization may be lacking.

Tidewater Community College does have several eligibility requirements students must meet. These may change from time to time.

• All students must have a high school diploma or the equivalent.
• All students must be at least 18 years of age.
• Students must be able to benefit from enrollment into the program.

Applications are available online at Tidewater Community College's website, as well as in person at any of the branches. Students may apply for financial aid both online and through the financial aid office at any of its campuses. Financial aid is available to help students and is made available to senior citizens.

The cost of enrollment at TCC is dependent on the courses taken as well as where you live. In state and out of state costs are available at the college's website. Discounts may be available for military families or in special circumstances.

Assessment tests occur at the time of enrollment. All students must take the College Assessment Testing Program. These are not admittance tests but rather are in use to help place each student into the appropriate college program.
