Student Loan Forgiveness Program

From LoveToKnow College

Are you interested in learning about a student loan forgiveness program? It can be difficult to understand the way that student loans work. It can be even harder to understand the requirements for students to enter into a student loan forgiveness program to get their loans erased. Keep reading if you would be interested in learning more about these programs and the options that are involved.

What Is A Student Loan Forgiveness Program?

In its simplest form, students who enter into certain types of programs can have their loans forgiven by the federal government. In this case, forgiveness means that the student no longer owes money on the loans and that the debt of those loans is absolved. The programs act as a way for a student to erase student loan debt without actually having to pay the loans.

Student Loan Forgiveness Stipulations

Though having one's student loans forgiven sounds like a great idea, there are a few stipulations that interested students should be aware of:

  • Loan forgiveness only applies to federal loans, such as Perkins or Stafford loans. Private loans cannot be forgiven by student programs.
  • These programs do not give something for nothing. In order to get loans forgiven, one must complete certain requirements.
  • Student loans that are forgiven can be considered taxable income, depending on the state one lives in. While the taxes incurred are surely better than having to repay student loans, for those on the edge of a different tax bracket, forgiveness may be something to worry about since it may push them into the next bracket.

How To Get Involved In Forgiveness Programs

In order to have student loans forgiven, graduates must complete one of the following requirements:

  1. Spend time volunteering through specialized programs
  2. Enter into some military service
  3. Become a teacher for certain precincts, districts and states
  4. Enter into specific medical professions
  5. Enter into careers (such as some types of lawyers) or work for businesses that absolve students of federal loans as a condition of employment

However, in each criteria for forgiveness, there are certain limitations and requirements that both lender and student must abide by (such as a certain amount of years involved in a program or a maximum numerical amount of loans that will be forgiven). Additionally, students interested in forgiveness should seek to find the program that fits them best. There are literally thousands of programs across the United States and world.

Volunteering

Popular volunteering programs that offer student loan forgiveness include Americorps and the Peace Corps. Americorps provides volunteers a stipend plus an additional $4725 credit to be applied towards student loans. Interested parties must serve for 12 months as a volunteer. For the Peace Corps, two years of service will allow students to defer their Stafford and Perkins loans and in some cases will allow cancellation of Perkins loan debts.

Military Service

The United States military offers several options to students looking for loan forgiveness. Service in the National Guard can have student loans of up to $10,000 forgiven. The Military and Navy also offer similar programs.

Teaching

Teaching is a popular method of student loan forgiveness. For teachers that begin teaching in an elementary or secondary school that serves lower-income families, a portion of Perkins loans can be forgiven. The amount forgiven increases with each year that a teacher teaches in one of the above listed types of schools. Additionally, certain states offer additional forgiveness programs for teachers that fit certain requirements.

Medical Fields

For students going into medicine, student loans may be forgiven, depending on the state. Much like student loan forgiveness for teachers, medical officials who work in areas that serve low-income families or lack medical professionals can receive forgiveness. Many individual hospitals have programs for their medical staff. There are also many private organizations that forgive student loans for those in medicine.

Final Thoughts

For those interested in student loan forgiveness, the programs and requirements can seem difficult. However, if students have already forged their way on one of these paths, being absolved of some student loan debt is a great joy.
