Founded in June of 1964, Oakland Community College is situated in the Oakland County area of Michigan and is the state's largest community college. The college now has 7 locations and active long distance learning programs.

Academics and Oakland Community College

There are over 45 one-year certificates and 100 two-year degrees available at Oakland CC. The school features five main degrees, leading students to an associate's degree in either applied science, business administration, general studies, liberal arts or science. Students can gain degrees in areas such as architecture, cosmetology, massage therapy and drama. The school's staff features high numbers of professors with advanced degrees (93% of the staff have more than a bachelor's degree). Of those 93%, 20% have terminal degrees in their fields. The school also features three 15-week semesters with alternative class length options in some circumstances.

Student Life

According to their official website, Oakland Community College has the 14th largest enrollment in the nation with over 74,000 students. The school also boasts students from more 80 countries and an average of 24 students per class. The school has several active sports teams with men's varsity sports in basketball, cross-country, and golf and women's varsity teams in basketball, cross-country, softball, tennis and volleyball. There is also a men's club soccer team.

Counseling and Student Services

One of the strongest arms at the community college in Oakland is its counseling department. Meant to help students succeed in their college careers, the center offers educational, career, and personal counseling. Each counselor working for the center has a graduate degree in their field. They also offer for-credit courses to students such as Orientation to College, Enhancing Self-Esteem, Personal Assertiveness and Career Portfolio Development available.

In addition to counseling, the school also offers services to students such as study group leaders, personal tutor sessions, and helpful software. In addition, the school provides building skills seminars in mathematics, study skills, English and technology. For those who find admissions stressful, it may be interesting to know that the school has an open door admission policy. What this means is that any student who is above the age of 18 and is either a high school graduate, its equivalent or a college transfer will be accepted.
