Grand Rapids Community College is located in Grand Rapids, Michigan and offers courses to more than 15,000 undergraduate students, as well as an additional 10,000 taking instructed courses on a non-credit basis.
Academics and Grand Rapids Community College
Grand Rapids offers a large number of degrees in the School of Workforce Development, such as business, nursing, occupational therapy assistants, hospitality, and drafting and design. In addition, the Liberal Arts offerings are plentiful, ranging from physical sciences to behavioral sciences, with English and performing arts in between. Students pursue associate's degrees and certificates at Grand Rapids Community College; in addition, GRCC has a very successful transfer program for students who would like to apply their GRCC credits to a bachelor's degree at another institution.
The first community college to open its doors in Michigan (in 1914), GRCC is nationally recognized for innovative teaching styles and being a student-centered institution. GRCC also offers an Honors Program, which adds academic challenge to the programs chosen by students who want to further challenge themselves in the classroom.
Student Life
GRCC's campus is urban, taking up more than 25 acres of downtown Grand Rapids. This unique location makes the school not only a fun place to study and live, it is also a great place to find jobs that will contribute to one's education. Area businesses are quick to employ GRCC students within their field of study, serving not only as a way to pay for school, but also a way to increase one's knowledge within the field.
The college offers several clubs and organizations, from sororities and fraternities to the requisite Computer Club. Advocacy clubs exist as well, such as the Black and Hispanic student unions. There are also many musical organizations, including the Chamber Orchestra and the Madrigal Singers.
Athletics
In addition to intramural athletics, GRCC offers both men's and women's sports teams. For men, baseball, basketball, tennis, football, and golf are on offer. For women, softball, basketball, volleyball, and tennis round out the roster.
Alumni
Famous alumni include baseball players Mickey Stanley and Rick Krueger.
