College Web Cams

From LoveToKnow College

Students, parents and the public view college web cams in very different lights. For students, college web cams provide fun ways to glimpse campus life from afar or check out the view of their favorite hangouts while away from campus. Parents enjoy seeing activity on college campuses, and may even use web cams to check up on their children and increase communication frequency. The public, however, may hold a very different perception of college web cams as many students explore using web cams for alternative entertainment.

College webcams may be useful or intrusive, depending on your view

College Web Cams

There are many types of web cams on college campuses.

Campus Web Cams

The most benign college web cams include campus cameras intended to highlight various buildings, activities, or simply provide a glimpse of what’s happening today at the institution. A plethora of sites contains web cams, ranging from mundane quad videos to sites from campuses as far away as Europe.

If you’re applying to a college, viewing their web cam provides a unique glimpse into daily campus life. Note the students you see on the web cam. Do you think you’d fit in? Are they enjoying themselves? Views of students studying may indicate a serious academic culture, while shots of kids playing games on the lawn during class time may hint at a more open, party-friendly culture.

Simple things like daily weather yield important clues about campus life, too. If the web cam reveals three feet of snow and you crave sunshine and surf, that college in Wisconsin might not be for you!

Interesting Colleges

A few favorite internet web cams include:

  • View the BBC-run Oxford web cam, which includes shots of some of Britain’s most famous schools, including Oxford, Cambridge, and the city of Oxford itself. If you’re yearning to join the elite crowd at Britain’s top college, catch a glimpse of daily life online.
  • Ivy-bound? Harvard University’s web cam displays many buildings, sites, and activities.
  • Students love Boston University’s web cam and visit it often to view campus activities. You can even choose your view of Boston and change images!
  • A website called Leonard's World provides a state-by-state directory of college video cameras throughout the United States. Please be aware that the site includes photos around the edges of the frame displaying the x-rated side of web cams and promotions for sexually oriented web cams. Viewer discretion is advised.

Parents and Web Cams

Students crave independence while parents seek communication. A compromise may include a web cam. Mounted on the student’s computer, web cams enable live video chats between parents and children. Although more complicated than a phone call, text message or email, video conferencing provides parents with reassuring images and live chat with their children.

Many web cams are preinstalled on laptops. Web cam may also be easily added to desktops and laptops via a USB port. Parents unfamiliar with web technology may need coaching from their kids on how to use such a web cam. However, the results are worth it if they keep parents and children in close communications.

Web Cams for Safety

In today’s world, when students tote guns to school and terrorist threats hover about like wasps ready to sting, campus web cams also provide safety features. Law enforcement, campus security, and campus administrators may review web cams to prevent crimes or catch criminals after students report crimes. Sometimes just by knowing a camera is near, criminals move on, hoping for lower security. Web cams provide an extra layer of vigilance to keep students, faculty and administrators safe.

The Seamier Side of Web Cams

While technology promises to improve communications and add value to our lives, there is also a darker side to it. Some college students use web cams for X-rated interactions.

If you or a friend is considering making these types of “home movies”, think before you act. Whatever you post may remain online for a long time to come. Do you want your grandparents, your pastor, or a prospective boss to see you like this on the net? Many companies now include web searches on candidates to see what their job seekers post online. You may want to focus your amateur videos on displaying your unique talents, such as singing, acting, writing, or other skills rather than on something that can haunt you later on.
