College Hockey

From LoveToKnow College

The current upsurge of interest in college hockey can be easily attributed to the fact that more than 25% of current NHL players were on college teams.

College Hockey vs NHL

The rules used in college hockey are, for the most part, the same as those used in the NHL. Two noticeable differences are that in college hockey, there is no clutching and grabbing and there is no fighting. Fighting in a college game is grounds for immediate exclusion.

NCAA Men’s Teams

The National College Athletic Association (NCAA) oversees Division I and Division III Men’s Ice Hockey. (There is no longer a Division II.) Unlike some other sports, the divisions are not regional, but are instead determined by criteria enforced by the NCAA. The divisions are divided into East and West regions. Division I consists of 58 teams, and Division III consists of 68 schools.

NCAA Men’s Conferences

There are fourteen men’s conferences within the NCAA, six in Division I, and eight in Division III.

Division I Conferences

  • Central Collegiate Hockey Association
  • College Hockey America
  • Hockey East Association
  • Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference
  • Western Collegiate Hockey Association

Division III Conferences

  • ECAC East
  • ECAC West
  • MIAC
  • SUNYAC
  • NCHA
  • ECAC Northeast
  • MCHA
  • Independents

NCAA Women’s Teams

The National College Athletic Association (NCAA) oversees a single division of Women's Ice Hockey – Division III. Like men's ice hockey, the division is divided into East and West regions. There are 32 women's teams registered.

NCAA Women's Conferences

There are currently only three conferences for NCAA women's teams.

  • Eastern College Athletic Conference
  • Western Collegiate Hockey Association
  • Independents

The American Collegiate Hockey Association

The American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) started out as a men's collegiate hockey league in 1992, but it quickly morphed into a league hosting over 150 teams in three men's divisions. A Women's Division was added in 2000. At this time, the AHCA boasts four divisions and over 300 teams.
