The college admissions process is the first step towards earning the degree you need for future success.
Finding the Right School
For high school students, searching for the right school can start as early as freshman year, but the quest really starts in earnest during the student's junior year. Four or five years later, the process starts once again for those pursuing graduate degrees. There are no age limits on applying to college, so nontraditional students bring their own unique perspective to the search.
Many students turn to college rankings to help them determine their top schools. While these rankings certainly indicate the prestige of a given school, they won't tell you which college is right for your individual needs. Campus tours, information sessions, interviews, and personal research help potential students form their own impression of a school.
Standardized Tests for College Admissions
Standardized test scores are required to apply to most colleges. While students can place great importance on getting a high score, it's just one more number in the larger picture. Available tests include:
- ACT for incoming college freshmen
- SAT for incoming college freshmen
- GRE for students attending grad school
- LSAT for law school admissions
- MCAT for medical school admissions
- GMAT for business school admissions
The Application
A college application is a snapshot of you as a student. During the college admissions process, it allows schools to determine who would best fit their campuses. Keep the following tips in mind to put your best foot foward:
- Fill out all forms neatly and legibly. Online forms are making this easier to accomplish.
- Keep up-to-date lists of your awards, accomplishments, and activities.
- Proofread essays carefully.
- Request all test scores and transcripts properly.
- Submit the required application fee.
- Meet or beat all deadlines.
